BOISE, Idaho — Deputy Sheriff Tobin Bolter, 27, became the first Ada County Sheriff’s Office deputy killed in the line of duty after being shot during a routine traffic stop on April 20, 2024.
According to authorities, Deputy Bolter initiated a traffic stop on a gray Chevy Suburban near the intersection of West Overland Road and South Raymond Street in Boise around 9:00 p.m. As he approached the vehicle, the driver opened fire, striking the deputy. Bolter was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries early the next morning.
The suspect fled the scene but was later located near a residence on South Jackson Street. When Boise Police officers attempted to take him into custody, he opened fire again. Officers returned fire, fatally shooting the suspect. The man was wanted on prior charges at the time of the incident.![]()

Deputy Bolter had served with the Ada County Sheriff’s Office for only four months but had a total of seven years in law enforcement. He was remembered by colleagues as a man of strong faith, quiet strength, and deep commitment to service. He is survived by his expectant wife, Abbey Bolter.
His death has sent shockwaves through Idaho’s law enforcement community, with agencies across the state and nation paying tribute to his sacrifice.
