Egyptian Writings Fuel Claims That Bible Giants, Nephilim, Were Real

A 3,300-year-old scroll from ancient Egypt is capturing renewed attention from historians and religious scholars due to descriptions of Bible giants, the Nephilim. The text, known as the Anastasi I papyrus, is housed in the British Museum and dates back to the 13th century B.C.

The document references a group called the Shosu, described as towering and hostile figures. According to the scroll, some members of this group stood between four and five cubits tall—equivalent to roughly eight feet. These individuals were also portrayed as aggressive and difficult to negotiate with, creating fear among those who crossed their path.

Though the scroll was first added to the museum’s collection in 1839, recent interpretations have prompted new discussions about whether the descriptions might align with ancient religious stories, including tales from the Old Testament.

Religious scholars reexamine ancient texts

A Pennsylvania-based research group, the Associates for Biblical Research, has revisited the Anastasi I scroll with fresh interest. The group suggests that the tall warriors mentioned in the Egyptian text may correspond to the Nephilim—mysterious, giant-like beings referenced in the Bible.

In the Book of Genesis, the Nephilim are described as the offspring of divine beings and human women. These figures were associated with widespread violence and are believed by some interpretations to have contributed to the decision to bring about the biblical flood.

Another reference in the Book of Numbers describes the sons of Anak, who appeared so large that the Israelites reportedly felt like “grasshoppers” by comparison. These stories have long fueled speculation about the existence of giants in the ancient world.

While the link between the Egyptian scroll and biblical figures remains unproven, the overlap in descriptions has reignited public interest and debate among researchers who explore the intersection of archaeology and religious texts.

Similar stories have appeared in other parts of the world. In Nevada, legends persist about unusually tall, red-haired individuals once living near a cave northeast of Reno. Reports dating back to the early 20th century claim that miners discovered up to 60 skeletons in the region, some measuring between seven and eight feet tall.

These claims, however, lack physical evidence and remain part of regional folklore. No verified findings have confirmed the existence of such remains.
