One Piece: The Possible True Identity Of The Iron Giant, Explained

One Piece marked the beginning of its final saga with the Egghead Island arc, and this part of the story has proven to be nothing short of absolutely spectacular. Fans have witnessed some of the most incredible plot threads being explored by Oda, while other mysteries have only just started getting revealed to the fans.

Of course, among the many mysteries that Oda introduced to the fans in this Arc, that of the Iron Giant stands at the top. The Iron Giant is massively important in One Piece, and although it may seem like this Giant hasn’t been doing much over the course of the last few chapters, it will eventually come into play in a significant manner, especially when its creation and real identity are made known.

The Mystery Of The Iron Giant In One Piece

The Iron Giant Is A Mechanical Marvel From The Void Century

The Iron Giant was first introduced at the very beginning of the Egghead Island arc. As soon as Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates got to the Fabriophase of Egghead, the Straw Hat Captain started exploring the island, as he always does, and stumbled upon this massive piece of junk. Luffy, at the time, thought this robot was not really all that significant. However, fans were proven wrong when Vegapunk started revealing some major info about the Iron Giant. According to Vegapunk, the Iron Giant is a piece of ancient technology that sleeps on Egghead Island. This giant was constructed at some point during the Void Century, which makes it incredibly special.

This is the legendary Iron Giant that is said to have attacked the sacred Marijoa 200 years ago! But, it was actually built 900 years ago!!

It is unknown why exactly this giant was created and who actually created it. It is also unknown how this giant was created in the first place. Although it may look like just a regular robot, there are aspects of this piece of technology that even Vegapunk cannot recreate, despite having a mind that is 500 years ahead of humanity. Specifically, Vegapunk cannot recreate the power source it used to run on, and this is the ancient energy that he craves desperately. Clearly, this ancient robot is much more significant than one would give it credit for, and it will most definitely come into play in some major way in the future of the story.

At the same time, fans also know that 200 years ago, the Iron Giant managed to attack Marijoa somehow. It is unknown how exactly it was still running for 600 years, or if it just awakened somehow. What fans know is that it managed to scale the Red Line and got all the way to the top. Then, the Iron Giant attempted to attack the Government, only to run out of energy at the very last moment. The Government ordered the joint to be dismantled, however, scientists who wanted to study it managed to preserve it, and eventually, it found its way to Vegapunk, who studied it greatly.

The Reawakening Of The Iron Giant

The Iron Giant Awakened Once Again In The Egghead Island Arc

In the Egghead Island arc of One Piece, the Iron Giant managed to awaken once again. This was something that was predicted at Game Rant. The Iron Giant would most definitely have awakened in this Arc, otherwise Oda would not have introduced it at all. This Giant is significant in more ways than one, and that is precisely why it ended up Awakening. As to what the trigger to its Awakening was, fans know that it managed to wake up as soon as Luffy tapped into the power of Gear 5. The more Luffy tapped into the power of Gear 5, the more it seemed to activate, and eventually, it even managed to stand up on its feet and fight. The Iron Giant even spoke of Joy Boy at one point in the arc, which means that it had some sort of connection to this mysterious individual who lived in the past.

Forgive me, Joy Boy!!

So far, on Egghead Island, the Iron Giant has not done anything significant. It has certainly taken the attention of all the Marines, and fans have clearly seen it being unaffected by even the strongest of cannon fires. The Iron Giant is also unaffected by flames, and above all, it appears to be an invincible force. In the next few chapters, the Iron Giant is certainly going to play a massive role and the fans absolutely cannot wait to see what exactly its role is going to be.

Of course, its job might not seem big at the moment, but it’s going to be absolutely massive at the very end of this arc, where Oda could even tackle some mysteries pertaining to it. The fact that the Giant has got connections to the Ancient Kingdom is what makes it so special. Of course, then, the question of why this Iron Giant matters right now arises. The connection that it has to Joy Boy and its significance in the Void Century can certainly answer that question.

Who Is The Iron Giant?

The Iron Giant Might Have Been A Former Buccaneer

The identity of the Iron Giant has been kept a secret all this time. However, eventually, fans will find out who this person is. A very popular idea suggested long ago that the Iron Giant is Joy Boy itself. However, this idea has been disproven ever since, as it is a known fact that the Iron Giant actually went ahead and apologized to Joy Boy once it fully awoke. That said, fans know for a fact that the Iron Giant has got connections to Joy Boy and is likely a very close ally. Just like Zunesha was Joy Boy’s companion, the Iron Giant could have been one as well. Looking at the design of the Iron and Giant, it seems to be based around the Ancient Giants of the One Piece world and it wears the hat of an Elbaf Giant. Clearly, it has some sort of connection to the Giants of the world.

Another race that is seemingly close to the Giants of the One Piece world is the Buccaneer race. More recently, Oda implied through Vegapunk that the Buccaneers’ willpower is somewhat special. For instance, with Kuma, Oda clearly showed that his body continued moving even though his free will was erased. Even though he had a body that was an iron shell, the willpower was still stored inside and he could still move.

This is somewhat similar to the Iron Giant. Even though this is an iron husk, it clearly carries willpower inside, and this could be linked to the special power of the Buccaneer race of the One Piece world. Essentially, someone from the Buccaneer race might have been made into the Iron Giant for purposes of war, and given an important mission by Joy Boy. It is possible that this guy failed the mission, due to running out of energy. Now, finally, this Iron Giant has awakened again.

Of course, all this is just conjecture, but that is all that the fans can do at this point. As far as the goal of the Iron Giant goes, it could potentially be to herald the re-emergence of Joy Boy and stand by his side. The reason why the Iron Giant apologized to Joy Boy could be because it failed to protect him efficiently, as it was in deep slumber. Now that it has awakened, however, the Iron Giant could potentially protect Luffy and pave the way for his escape from Egghead Island.
