Since its launch in 2010, the โDespicable Meโ and โMinionsโ movies have become the biggest global animated franchise in history, with the films collectively grossing nearly $5 billion. 2022โs โMinions: The Rise of Gruโ topped the global box office in its opening weekend and shattered records for the July 4 holiday with aย $125 million domestic haul. โDespicable Me 4โ tallied just shy of that number, with an impressive $122.6 million domestic debut, and is expected to top the charts again in itsย second weekย of release, earning more than $30 million.
In a piece analyzing the summer box office and the state of animation,ย Varietyย chief film criticย Peter Debrugeย wrote that โthe weekend that once belonged to Will Smith โ and which hosted a geriatric Indiana Jonesโ return last year โ has long been the domain of โDespicable Meโ movies.โ
For seven of the last 14 years, he noted, Illumination Entertainment has planted one of its toon tentpoles (which also includes โThe Secret Life of Pets,โ another hit franchise in its $10 billion-grossing library of titles) on or immediately after Independence Day weekend โ a strategic move that seems to be working. (โDespicable Me 2โ and โDespicable Me 3โ each made more than $1 billion at the global box office.)
โLess than a year after dual writersโ and actorsโ strikes shut down Hollywood, kid-friendly cartoons are propping up the theatrical box office in a big way,โ he concluded, also pointing to the billion-dollar-grossing โInside Out 2โ as proof of animationโs domination at the multiplex.
