"AJ's Law": The Story of Alexavier J. Pedrin | True Crime Documentary

On February 11, 2023, a chilling emergency call from Meorie, Wisconsin, unveiled the heart-wrenching case of Alexavier J. Pedrin, a six-year-old boy whose life ended tragically. The investigation revealed that the person responsible was Josie Dykeman, the ex-girlfriend of Alex’s father, who allegedly took advantage of vulnerable moments when the father was away.

Welcome back to Crime Delvy. I’m Luca, and today we’re diving into a case that exposes not just the grim reality of child 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮 but also the alarming gaps in the child protection system. As we unravel this timeline, it becomes painfully clear that sometimes, the most frightening aspect isn’t the absence of witnesses, but the presence of many who failed to act.

Born on July 10, 2016, in On Alaska, Wisconsin, Alexavier was described by his family as a vibrant child with a radiant smile and a zest for life. His love for playing with siblings, cars, and cartoons painted a picture of a happy little boy. However, Alex’s life was far from simple, tangled in a web of adult complexities and unstable relationships that no child should have to navigate.

Alex’s father, Derek Pedran, had a troubled history marked by legal issues and allegations of domestic violence. His relationship with Alex’s mother, Gina Love, began in 2008, but it was fraught with instability from the start. Derek faced numerous legal troubles, including charges related to domestic violence, which created a tumultuous environment for Alex even before he was born.

After Derek and Gina’s separation, Derek entered a new relationship with Josie Dykeman, who had her own complicated past. Josie and Derek’s home soon became a crowded space, filled with children from previous relationships and new additions. This blending of families, while common, often led to blurred boundaries and instability, a situation that would prove dangerous for Alex.

The first signs of trouble emerged in 2011 when Child Protective Services (CPS) was alerted to issues in Josie’s previous home. A serious incident involving a young girl led to her removal from Josie’s care, raising red flags about Josie’s ability to provide a safe environment. Despite this, Josie and Derek continued to expand their family, welcoming two daughters together, and eventually, Alex.

As Alex grew, family members began to notice troubling behavior from Josie towards him. Reports surfaced of Alex being treated harshly, sparking concern among relatives. An anonymous tip to CPS highlighted Josie’s struggles with caring for multiple children, raising alarms about neglect and potential 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮.

In early 2019, Alex returned from a visit with his father showing visible signs of injury. Despite explanations that seemed plausible, the frequency of such incidents led to increasing worry from family members. Yet, despite these concerns, CPS closed the case, citing insufficient evidence.

The situation escalated when Derek was charged with domestic violence against Josie, yet they quickly resumed their relationship. This cycle of violence and instability continued, culminating in a series of troubling incidents involving Alex, including a serious leg injury that raised further alarms.

On January 16, 2023, Alex was taken to the hospital for a leg injury. Josie’s explanations for the injury were inconsistent, raising suspicions among medical staff. Just weeks later, on that fateful February morning, Josie called 911, reporting that Alex was unresponsive. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Investigators soon uncovered alarming details surrounding Alex’s death. An empty medication bottle was found near his body, prompting questions about potential exposure to harmful substances. With Josie as the only adult present at the time of the emergency, investigators turned their focus on her, piecing together a troubling narrative of neglect and 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮.

As the investigation unfolded, autopsy results revealed signs of severe trauma, contradicting the narrative of accidental injuries. Josie Dykeman was arrested and charged with multiple serious offenses, including first-degree intentional homicide, chronic neglect, and physical 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮 of a child.

Public outcry followed, with community members rallying for justice for Alex. Protests outside the courthouse highlighted the systemic failures that allowed Alex’s tragic story to unfold. His family, determined to ensure that his story was not forgotten, launched a movement advocating for reforms in child protection laws.

As the case progresses through the legal system, it raises critical questions about accountability and the effectiveness of protective measures for vulnerable children. With the trial of Josie Dykeman set to begin, the community remains on edge, seeking answers and justice for a young boy whose life was cut tragically short.

What changes will come from this heartbreaking case, and how can we ensure that no child falls through the cracks again?
