A new āThe Smurfsā movie is coming in 2025!
The Smurfs 3Ā is a proposed third installment in the live-action/CGI animatedĀ SmurfsĀ franchise. The announcement was made about two weeks afterĀ The Smurfs 2 was released in theaters. It was originally set for a release in 2015 but was cancelled. Both movies made over 70% of their worldwide grosses from international markets.
Columbia PicturesĀ andĀ Sony Pictures AnimationĀ were already developing a script forĀ The Smurfs 3 with writers Karey Kirkpatrick and Chris Poche.
The third film “might actually deal with the genuine origin of how all these characters ran into each other way back when.”
The Smurfs 3 Will Be Completely Animated
Although we have yet to hear any official confirmation from Sony Pictures, a new report fromĀ VarietyĀ reveals thatĀ The Smurfs 3Ā will be completely animated, as opposed to 2011’sĀ The SmurfsĀ and 2013’sĀ The Smurfs 2, both of which were live-action/animation hybrids.
It is believed thatĀ The Smurfs 2’s $347 million worldwide box office take, which was $215 million less thanĀ The Smurfs’ $563.7 million, is a reason the decision to go with a fully-animated sequel was made. Both movies made over 70% of their worldwide grosses from international markets.
What’s interesting is that The Smurfs’ main villain Gargamel has been portrayed in live-action byĀ Hank Azaria, so it isn’t clear if the studio is crafting a new villain, or if they will simply use Gargamel in animated form. Other live-action cast members fromĀ The SmurfsĀ andĀ The Smurfs 2Ā includeĀ Neil Patrick HarrisĀ andĀ Jayma MaysĀ as Patrick and Grace, a New York couple who help the Smurfs on their adventures.
WeĀ reportedĀ in May 2012 thatĀ Over The HedgeĀ writers Karey Kirkpatrick and Chris Poche were hired to write the screenplay, withĀ Jordan KernerĀ producing. It isn’t known ifĀ Raja Gosnell, who directed bothĀ The SmurfsĀ andĀ The Smurfs 2, will be back at the helm.
