THE OLD COUPLE WHO COLLECTS PLASTIC BOTTLES

My name is Ethan. I’m 23 and have been unemployed for five months. Every day I walk around the neighborhood looking for any kind of job, but nothing comes through. Money is running out fast, and I feel more useless with each passing day.
One hot afternoon, while walking home, I saw an elderly couple in their late 70s struggling with two huge, heavy bags of plastic bottles. They were sweating heavily, moving very slowly toward the recycling collection point almost a kilometer away. The old lady’s hands were shaking from the weight.
I ran over without thinking.
“Sir, ma’am, let me help you.”

I took both heavy bags and carried them. The old man, Mr. Tran, looked at me with surprise and gratitude. His wife, Mrs. Lan, smiled tiredly and kept saying “Thank you, child.”
We walked together slowly. They told me they collect plastic bottles every day to sell for a little extra money. Even though it was hard, they said it made them feel useful. When we finally reached the collection point, Mrs. Lan held my hand with her small, wrinkled hands.
“You’re a good young man. Not many people care about two old folks like us.”
I felt a lump in my throat. I helped them sort the bottles quickly before saying goodbye.
One week later, I was surprised when someone knocked on my door.

Mr. Tran smiled proudly.
“This is our small recycling workshop. We’ve been running it for 12 years. We collect, sort, and sell plastic to bigger factories.”
Mrs. Lan continued gently:
“We’ve been looking for someone honest and kind to help us. Would you like to work here as a part-time Sorter? You would help sort different types of plastic, clean the yard, and pack materials.”
They offered me:

- Part-time: 4–5 hours per day (flexible around job interviews)
- Salary: $1,800 per month
- Free lunch every working day (home-cooked by Mrs. Lan)
- A kind, peaceful working environment with two gentle “grandparents”
Mr. Tran patted my shoulder.
“You helped us when we needed it most. Now let us help you.”
From an unemployed young man who carried two heavy bags on a hot afternoon…
…to having a stable part-time job at a small recycling workshop, earning money with dignity, eating warm meals, and working with two kind-hearted elders who treat me like family.
The End.
