THE FRENCH LADY WHO LOST HER DOG
My name is Ethan. I’m 23, American, and I’ve been living in Saigon for eight months. I came here to teach English but lost my job three months ago. Since then, I’ve been surviving on savings and the occasional freelance job. Most days I feel lost and useless.
One humid Sunday afternoon, while walking through a quiet alley in District 2, I heard desperate crying. An elderly French woman in her late 70s was frantically calling out, “Lulu! Lulu!” Her voice was breaking. Her small white Maltese dog had run off while she was buying flowers.
I approached her and asked gently, “Ma’am, can I help you look for her?”
She looked at me with teary eyes and nodded. For the next two hours, we searched together — calling Lulu’s name, checking every corner, asking shop owners, and walking through small alleys under the burning sun. My shirt was soaked with sweat, but I couldn’t leave her alone.
Finally, near a small park, we heard a faint bark. Lulu was hiding under a bush, scared but unharmed. The old lady dropped to her knees, hugged her dog tightly, and cried. She turned to me, holding my hands with both of hers.
“You are a kind young man. Merci… thank you so much. I thought I lost her forever.”
Four days later, I received a message:
Dear Ethan, This is Madame Claire Moreau. You helped me find Lulu. Please come visit me at 128 Nguyen Van Huong Street whenever you are free. — Claire
I went the next morning. It wasn’t a house. It was a beautiful, high-end pet store and spa called Lulu’s Haven.
Madame Claire greeted me with a warm smile, Lulu in her arms.
“You didn’t just help me find my dog that day,” she said. “You showed real kindness. I’ve been looking for someone I can trust.”
She continued:
“I own a small chain of luxury pet shops and grooming spas in Ho Chi Minh City. I need a Part-time Store Manager who genuinely loves animals and customers. Would you like to work with me?”
She offered me:
- Part-time (25–30 hours per week)
- Salary: $1,200 per month (very good for part-time in Vietnam)
- Free grooming and pet care for any pet I have in the future
- Training in pet care and business management
- A kind, air-conditioned working environment
Madame Claire smiled gently.
“You helped an old French lady when she was most desperate. Now let this old lady help you.”
From an unemployed young foreigner who spent two sweaty hours searching for a lost dog…
…to working as a Store Manager at a beautiful pet chain, surrounded by animals, kind people, and a stable income in a city that once felt so lonely.
The End.
