O site da Fundação Diogo Jota desapareceu após arrecadar mais de 60.000 USD de doadores.

No dia 21 de agosto, o site da Fundação Diogo Jota, com o domínio diogojotafoundation.org, ficou completamente em branco. Quando questionados, o Liverpool FC e a família do falecido jogador negaram qualquer ligação com esta organização.

A Fundação Diogo Jota apareceu apenas três dias após a morte do atacante português. Eles afirmaram ter arrecadado 64.573 USD, aceitando pagamentos apenas em criptomoedas. Os apoiadores eram orientados a uma plataforma onde podiam pagar com “USDT, ETH e outras criptomoedas através da NOWPayments de forma segura”. No entanto, a diretora executiva da NOWPayments, Kate Lifshits, afirmou que não processou nenhum pagamento relacionado.

A Fundação Diogo Jota declarou que seu objetivo era homenagear o legado de Diogo Jota, utilizando o dinheiro arrecadado para apoiar jovens, melhorar a vida da comunidade e trazer alegria do futebol a todos. A fundação também afirmou ter fornecido 25.000 refeições, patrocinado 300 alunos e estabelecido 50 parcerias locais.

De acordo com o Comitê de Caridade da Inglaterra, a Fundação Diogo Jota nunca registrou uma solicitação. O registro é obrigatório se a receita da organização de caridade ultrapassar 6.800 USD por ano e tiver sede na Inglaterra ou no País de Gales.

Diogo Jota e seu irmão Andre faleceram na Espanha no dia 3 de julho, enquanto dirigiam de Portugal e planejavam pegar um ferry para a Inglaterra. O carro que o jogador trágico estava dirigindo supostamente teve um pneu furado enquanto estava em alta velocidade, antes de sair da estrada e pegar fogo. Antes disso, Jota havia passado por uma cirurgia pulmonar. Segundo a orientação dos médicos, ele deveria evitar voar para reduzir a pressão nos pulmões durante o período pós-operatório.

Jota faleceu apenas 11 dias após se casar com Rute Cardoso, com quem teve três filhos. Após a tragédia, mesmo tendo o direito de recusar, o Liverpool pagou integralmente os dois anos restantes de salário no contrato da família do jogador.

O atual campeão da Premier League também aposentou a camisa número 20, que pertencia a Jota. Seu nome e número estarão sempre presentes na lista de jogadores a cada temporada. Além disso, através da Fundação LFC, o Liverpool criou um programa de futebol comunitário chamado Jota.

Jota jogou pelo Liverpool desde a temporada 2020-2021, marcando 65 gols em 182 jogos, conquistando a Premier League, a FA Cup e a EFL Cup. Ele também marcou 14 gols em 49 jogos pela seleção portuguesa, conquistando duas Nations League.
