Let’s Compare the United Kingdom with Former British Africa | Country Comparison

In a striking new analysis, the stark contrasts between the United Kingdom and its former African colonies have come to light, revealing a tale of two worlds defined by economic power, population density, and cultural diversity. The data, unveiled by Data Duck, highlights the profound disparities that persist decades after colonial rule.

The United Kingdom, with a landmass of 242,495 square kilometers, boasts a robust nominal GDP of $1.57 trillion and a staggering GDP per capita of $54,949. In contrast, the collective former British African nations, spanning over 10.5 million square kilometers, present a different narrative. These countries, home to 688.5 million people, show a nominal GDP of $3.84 trillion, yet their GDP per capita stands at a mere $2,280, underscoring the economic challenges faced by many.

The demographic data is equally telling. While the UK has a population density of 270.7 people per square kilometer, former British African nations like Nigeria soar to 231 million people, with an alarming density that speaks to urban overcrowding and resource strain. In terms of wealth, the UK leads with 1,455 billionaires, including the richest person, Alien, valued at $23.9 billion, while Africa’s richest, Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote, pales in comparison with $18.01 billion.

Language and religion further illustrate the cultural divide. English reigns supreme in the UK, spoken by 67 million, while Arabic, the most spoken language in Africa, is used by 140 million. Islam dominates the religious landscape in Africa with 350 million followers, contrasting sharply with Christianity’s 33 million adherents in the UK.

This urgent comparison sheds light on the ongoing legacy of colonialism, prompting critical discussions about economic disparity, cultural identity, and the path forward for both regions. As the world watches, the implications of this data resonate louder than ever, calling for action and reflection on the historical ties that continue to shape our global landscape.
