Why Fans Still Have Questions About This Fight in Dragon Ball Super: Broly

No one in the Dragon Ball fandom questions whether Dragon Ball Super: Broly is one of the best films in the series’ history — that sentiment is virtually unanimous. However, there are some things in the film itself that raise questions that fans still debate about, even over five years after the film was initially released. Many fans’ questions, in particular, arise from the climax of the film: Broly’s fight with Gogeta, the fused form of Goku and Vegeta.

Looked at on the surface level, Gogeta versus Broly is a fight of epic proportions between super-powered saiyan warriors that ends with a definitive winner whose victory can’t be called into question. That said, when fans begin to look deeper at what actually happened in the fight itself, there are things viewers are naturally bound to be confused about. That’s mainly because the mechanics of what occurred aren’t actually explained much in the movie itself, but can only truly be understood by looking at outside Dragon Ball media, including the original DBZ anime.

Did Broly and Gogeta Break Into a Parallel Dimension?

Gogeta and Broly’s Attack Was So Powerful It Shattered Space-Time Itself

One of the most potentially confusing aspects of the fight against Broly came when he and Gogeta entered what appeared to be another reality. While they were both in their initial SSJ forms, Gogeta and Broly fired a beam blast that collided, with the collision proving so powerful that they seemed to have broken reality. What really happened was that Gogeta and Broly’s attack shattered space-time itself, causing them to break through into another dimension.

Gogeta and Broly essentially broke into a separate, parallel reality. This is an incredible feat of power, but not something that hasn’t been seen before in Dragon Ball. During the Buu Saga in DBZ, Majin Buu displayed a similar ability during the fight against Gotenks in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Because the Time Chamber is considered another dimension, Piccolo destroys the door to the chamber so that Buu can never escape. However, Buu was able to break through the dimensional barrier to reemerge back on earth.

Ironically, Gotenks is the only other warrior shown to have completed the fusion dance in the canonical storyline. It’s unclear whether Toriyama included this dimension shattering scene in Super: Broly in order to pay homage to the classic fight between Gotenks and Buu, or whether this was just a coincidence. In any case, this early example of Buu in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber shows that breaking through dimensions was not only completely feasible during Gogeta and Broly’s fight, but it was also highly likely considering the incredible levels of power they were fighting at.

Gogeta’s Base Power is Already Much Stronger Than Vegeta and Goku Seperately

Dragon Ball Super Needs to Make Pan a Super Saiyan if the Series Wants to Avoid GT’s Biggest Mistake

Pan is one of Dragon Ball Super’s youngest heroes and the anime can avoid one of Dragon Ball GT’s biggest follies by turning her into Super Saiyan.

Breaking through dimensions mid-fight is truly an incredible feat, but it also raises further questions of how strong Gogeta and Broly must have been to pull this off. In fact, while Broly himself can at least be scaled based on his fight with Golden Frieza, Goku SSj Blue and Vegeta SSJ Blue, Gogeta, on the other hand, is a bit of a wildcard. That’s because, as seen in the film, Gogeta in his base form was able to fight on par with Super Saiyan Broly.

What’s so impressive about base Gogeta not being completely decimated by SSJ Broly is that SSJ Broly was strong enough to beat both Goku and Vegeta in their SSJ Blue forms at the same time. That’s not even Broly’s strongest form, as he only had to become his green-haired Full Power Super Saiyan from after Gogeta powered-up. This raises another question that many fans have in regard to this fight, which is how Gogeta at Super Saiyan Blue was so much more powerful than Vegeta and Goku were in the same form.

The answer to that is simple: not every saiyan’s Super Saiyan form is equal. When Gogeta turned SSJ himself, he easily dominated the fight the entire time because his base form is already more powerful than SSJ Blue Goku or Vegeta. Super Saiyan isn’t a set power level, but is rather a power-up on top of the saiyan’s own natural power. In fact, Super Saiyan is a 50 times multiplier on top of the saiyan’s base form, which explains why Broly going Super Saiyan made him far more powerful than a SSJ Blue.

The Broly films are among the most popular in the Dragon Ball franchise. Here’s a ranking of each film from the worst of the bunch to the best.

Is Broly Still the Legendary Super Saiyan in Dragon Ball Super?

Dragon Ball Super Never Gives Broly Such a Name

As powerful as Broly is in Super: Broly, it’s easy to get caught up in presuming that his powers should line up with what older versions of the character did. For example, some have pointed out that Broly turning into a regular Super Saiyan before going into his green-haired Rage form doesn’t line up with the original Legendary Super Saiyan form, and that’s certainly true – but that’s not even the most confusing thing about Broly’s power. Whereas Broly’s green-haired Super Saiyan form used to be refered to as the Legendary Super Saiyan in DBZ, the version shown in Dragon Ball Super is never given such a name.

In fact, Broly isn’t even the first character in the series to show off this form – it was actually Kale of Universe 6. While Kale’s power up is extremely similar to Broly’s, her version of the transformation doesn’t receive any official name in the anime or manga either. In the manga, Caulifla does briefly question whether Kale could be the “legendary super saiyan,” referring to it as the “demonic saiyan that only shows up once every 1,000 years,” but it’s never actually confirmed that’s what she actually is.

In some media, it’s referred to as Berserker Super Saiyan, while in concept art from the anime it’s referred to as Kale’s Super Saiyan 2 form. Alternatively, in the video game Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Broly’s green-haired SSJ form is referred to as Full Power Super Saiyan. So, while the Dragon Ball Super anime and manga doesn’t have a widely agreed upon official name for the form, Broly’s green-haired form in Dragon Ball Super could either be referred to as Full Power Super Saiyan, or Berserker Super Saiyan.

How High Could Broly’s Potential Have Gone?

Dragon Ball Super: Is Broly Stronger Than Goku? & 12 Other Things to Know About the Legendary Super Saiyan

Broly is known as the Legendary Super Saiyan of the Dragon Ball franchise, and his appearance in Super changes & adds to his character.

Even if Broly’s officially canon incarnation isn’t technically the Legendary Super Saiyan of old, it doesn’t change the fact that he has seemingly limitless potential. One of the things that fans question the most about Broly is how far his power can actually go. If given the time, many believe that he could have eventually reached Gogeta’s power — or even surpassed it. That’s certainly an issue worth considering, especially since he quickly adapts to the power of a Super Saiyan God while not even in his Super Saiyan form.

If Broly became a Super Saiyan God, he may very well be just as strong as Gogeta was. However, just because Broly’s power seems limitless, that’s not actually the case. Broly’s power is closely tied to his rage. When he first begins adapting and reaching new levels of power against Goku and Vegeta in their fight, it’s generally because he is getting more and more angry and desperate as the fight goes on. However, he does reach a peak. It’s only when Frieza kills Broly’s father that he once again surpasses that peak of rage and becomes increasingly stronger again.

By the time he achieves his Full Power Super Saiyan from in the fight against Gogeta Blue, Broly has pretty much hit the limits of his rage. Gogeta seeks to defeat Broly before the latter can become any more powerful, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he had much more room to grow during the fight. There’s not much that could conceivably make Broly any more angry than he was at that moment after his father’s death, so him tapping into even more rage to become stronger than he was at that point is pretty unlikely.

With the limit of his power being somewhere around Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta, it’s unlikely that Broly could have beaten Ultra Instinct Goku, or Ultra Ego Vegeta. Prior to the Granolah Saga, Whis stated that Goku and Vegeta were the two strongest mortals in their universe, Broly included. Broly is still a largely enigmatic figure in the series, especially since he was only made canonical in Dragon Ball Super: Broly. That being the case, it’s almost certain that many questions fans had about his abilities will be answered in Super‘s upcoming arcs.
