In one of the most compelling betrayals in recent true crime history, a killer’s own best friend became the key to bringing him to justice.

On December 3, 2016, 19-year-old Sarah Stern disappeared in Neptune City, New Jersey. Her car was found abandoned on a bridge with the keys still inside. For weeks, the case remained a mystery until a crucial tip came from an unexpected source — Anthony Curry, best friend of suspect Liam McAtasney.

Liam McAtasney, who had been in a brief relationship with Sarah, confessed to Anthony that he had pushed her off the bridge and stolen money from her. Unsettled by the confession, Anthony secretly began recording their conversations. In one chilling recording, Liam casually described the murder, not realizing he was being captured on tape.
When Liam eventually discovered he was being recorded, his reaction was one of panic and betrayal. The recordings proved instrumental in his arrest and conviction. In 2019, Liam McAtasney was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Sarah Stern.

Sarah Stern was remembered by friends and family as a kind, artistic young woman with a bright future. Her tragic death highlighted the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of trusting one’s instincts when something feels wrong.

The case also demonstrated how ordinary people, like Anthony Curry, can play a heroic role in bringing justice by doing the right thing despite personal risk. Years later, the story of Sarah Stern continues to serve as a haunting reminder of how betrayal and courage can coexist in the same circle of friends.
