Illinois Mother Admits Killing 7-Year-Old Son After Years of Abuse Allegations

OREGON, Ill. — A tragic child abuse case that shocked a small Illinois community has finally reached its conclusion. Nearly five years after the death of 7-year-old Nathaniel Burton, his mother, Sarah Safranek, pleaded guilty to murdering her son and was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
The case began in the early hours of February 17, 2021, when police responded to a 911 call reporting that Nathaniel was not breathing. His parents claimed they discovered him unresponsive in his bedroom. However, an autopsy quickly revealed a horrifying truth: Nathaniel had been suffocated to death, and his death was ruled a homicide.
As investigators examined the family home, they found no signs of forced entry, leaving Nathaniel’s parents as the only possible suspects. Interviews with relatives soon painted a disturbing picture. Both of Nathaniel’s grandmothers told police the boy had repeatedly described abuse by his mother, including incidents where she allegedly held a pillow over his face, tried to drown him in a bathtub, and physically assaulted him.
Further evidence emerged from videos recorded by Nathaniel’s godmother. In the recordings, the young boy described being slapped, punched, and forced underwater by his mother. Family members said Nathaniel often expressed fear that his mother would eventually kill him.
Investigators also discovered a history of child abuse complaints filed with Illinois child welfare authorities. Despite multiple reports between 2018 and 2021, Nathaniel remained in his mother’s care.
Although Sarah Safranek initially denied responsibility and blamed Nathaniel’s father, she ultimately changed her plea in November 2025. Her conviction brought long-awaited justice, but for many, the outcome remains bittersweet.
Nathaniel’s death has renewed concerns about failures within the child protection system and the missed opportunities that might have saved a young life.
