Tragic Fatal Fall: Young Woman Dies After Being Thrown from Brazilian Bridge Without Safety Rope
Limeira, Brazil — A rope-jumping excursion at an abandoned bridge turned into a horrifying tragedy when 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas plunged more than 130 feet to her death after instructors allegedly failed to attach her safety cord.

The incident occurred on June 13 at the so-called Skeleton Bridge (Ponte do Esqueleto) in Limeira, São Paulo state — a disused railway viaduct popular for unauthorized extreme sports. Video footage shows Freitas, dressed in a helmet and harness, being hoisted into a “Superman” pose by two men before being launched off the edge. She was not secured to any rope. Bystanders can be heard screaming in panic as she fell.
Three instructors — identified as Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff (32), Vitor de Freitas Goncalves (27), and Maicon Fernandes Cintra (42) — were arrested shortly after the incident. They face homicide charges involving “eventual intent,” a Brazilian legal concept covering reckless actions with awareness of potential deadly risk. Authorities report the men initially fled the scene, with two found in nearby woods via helicopter. Some changed clothes and appeared disoriented during questioning, unable to explain who was responsible for equipment checks.
Freitas, a recent physical education graduate aspiring to teach, had shared excited posts on Instagram before the jump, including one asking, “Who is the crazy person who let me come jump off a bridge?” Her fiancé reportedly witnessed the event and collapsed in shock. A nurse at the scene attempted life-saving measures, but Freitas was pronounced dead.

The unregulated nature of the activity has drawn scrutiny, with critics questioning oversight on the federal-government-owned bridge. This case highlights the dangers of informal extreme sports operations lacking proper safety protocols.
Legal experts note that while the men did not intend to kill, the extreme indifference to safety could result in significant prison time. The investigation continues.
