Gilgo Beach Horror Deepens: Former Police Commissioner Reveals How Task Force Finally Caught the Long Island Serial Killer
New York — As Rex Heuermann prepares to receive multiple consecutive life sentences on June 17, 2026, new details continue to emerge about one of America’s most notorious serial killer cases. Former Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison, who helped establish the Gilgo Beach Task Force, sat down to discuss the painstaking investigation that brought Heuermann to justice.

Heuermann, a Manhattan architect living a double life in Massapequa Park, was arrested in July 2023 near his office on Fifth Avenue. He has pleaded guilty to the murders of seven women and admitted responsibility for an eighth. The victims — many of them sex workers — were found wrapped in burlap and discarded near Gilgo Beach between 2010 and 2011, with killings dating back to 1993.
Harrison highlighted key breakthroughs, including a witness description of a large man driving a distinctive green Chevy Avalanche and advanced cell phone data analysis. The task force brought together local, state, and federal resources to overcome earlier investigative setbacks.

The case has left an indelible mark on Long Island, raising ongoing questions about potential additional victims and the systemic failures that allowed Heuermann to operate undetected for nearly three decades. Families of the victims are expected to deliver powerful impact statements at today’s sentencing.
