Garp’s Fate: Will the Navy Legend Sacrifice for the New Generation?

The Hero of the Marines, Garp has been at the forefront of things in the Final Saga of One Piece.

Fans never expected Garp to get as much importance as he has in the Final Saga, but it has certainly been a pleasant surprise. In the Egghead Island Arc of One Piece, Garp had a major role cut out for him. Fans got to see his power firsthand, but more than that, he got involved in a major plot point that is going to be resolved sooner rather than later in the story.

Right now, Garp is a captive of the Blackbeard Pirates, and it is clear that the Emperor has sinister plans for him. Although he’s alive and well right now, Garp could potentially go on to die in the Final Saga, and his death would certainly pave the way for a new era, just like that of Roger.

Garp’s Capture In One Piece Happened On Hachinosu

Garp Fought The Blackbeard Commanders

Kuzan Took Down Garp

Garp set out on a major mission by himself when news about Koby being captured by the Blackbeard Pirates was announced. Garp values Koby highly and believes him to be the future of the Navy. Given that Koby is his own protege, Garp did not waste even a single second to go out and rescue him. Taking some members of the SWORD along with other Navy individuals, such as Tashigi, with him, he launched an offensive on the Pirate Island to rescue Koby. Garp delivered a mighty blow to many pirates on the island and caused quite a lot of destruction there. It is safe to say that Garp was on a completely different level to anyone on the Pirate Island and that the only one who could even hope of holding his own against him in combat was Kuzan, the former Marine Admiral.

Wavering is a sign of weakness! – Garp

Even then, it was clear to see that Kuzan was not his equal and struggled to fight him. That is precisely why the remaining Commanders of the Blackbeard Pirates that were on Hachinosu joined their forces and launched a collective offensive against him.

Eventually, due to underhanded tactics, the Blackbeard Pirates succeeded in injuring Garp to a point where he could not bring out his best and took him down. That said, Garp succeeded in his mission of rescuing Koby and secured the escape route for all the Navy members. Essentially, Garp gave up his life for Koby and was down at the mercy of the Blackbeard Pirates. Despite Kuzan going for the kill, Garp survived and is currently in chains on Hachinosu. Fans saw Blackbeard return to Hachinosu after the events of the Egghead Arc, and it was clear to see that while he was upset about Koby having escaped, he was over the moon upon finding out that the one they captured instead was Garp.

Now, Blackbeard can proceed with his plans in an even more efficient manner and hope to secure the deal that he wants from the Navy. However, little does he know that the consequences of this deal could be far more grim for him and his pirate crew.

A War Will Be Fought Over Garp Very Soon In One Piece

The Marines Are Likely To Reject Garp’s Terms

Right now, Garp is a captive on Hachinosu. However, that won’t be the case for long. For one, Oda will absolutely not let Garp be humiliated or mistreated, given that he is a legendary figure and one that he considers to be very dear. As such, Garp will most definitely not die in chains, and at the same time, he will also not simply be handed over to the Navy. Blackbeard aims to exchange Garp for country status for Hachinosu and official recognition from the World Government. He wants to officially be a part of the many countries that the World Government has recognized and to be named King itself. Of course, the Government absolutely cannot name any random rogue as King and recognize the lawless Island as an official country. That would be against everything that they stand for, and above all, in the eyes of the world, it would simply be bowing down to the whims and wishes of a pirate.

Even though Blackbeard thinks that he has leverage because of Garp, this deal is not going to be as straightforward as he believes.

According to Blackbeard, the Navy absolutely cannot let their symbol, Garp, die. As such, he feels they will be forced to accept Blackbeard’s terms. However, what Blackbeard isn’t considering is a completely different alternative, which is the Navy launching an all-out assault on the Pirate Island in an attempt to rescue Garp and destroy Blackbeard for good. Under Sengoku, the Navy might not have taken drastic actions such as this one, but under Sakazuki, it is definitely possible. As such, Blackbeard should brace himself for an all-out assault of the Navy and a major war to be fought on the Pirate Island.

In a way, this would also mirror Marine Ford. There, a pirate, Ace, was captured and was held captive in the HQ of the Navy. Here, a Marine is captured and is kept captive on the biggest pirate island in the world. There, Pirates invaded to rescue Ace, and here, Marines will invade to rescue Garp. As fans know, at the end of the day, Ace ended up dying in this war, which opens the door for Garp’s death as well.

Why Garp Could Die In The Final Saga

Garp’s Death Could Inspire The Next Generation Of The Navy

Garp could potentially die in the Final Saga for many reasons. For one, a war is most definitely going to be fought on the Pirate Island and this war will most likely include characters such as Koby as well. Once this war kickstarts, Garp will most likely be freed at some point, and he will join the action again. But, just like Ace, Garp could potentially give up his life to save the next generation. Garp considers himself to be an old man and he knows that the up-and-coming generation has more potential than him at this point. He will not think twice before risking his life for them, and his death could even help further the growth of characters such as Koby and other SWORD Marines even further.

You guys are the future of the Marines! – Garp

Just as Oda used Ace as a catalyst to ensure that Luffy grew to the next level, he could do the same with Garp as well and ensure that Koby and the other SWORD members grow with this loss. Above all, this would also solidify the growing threat of Blackbeard, because he would then have officially defeated the Navy on the Pirate Island. This would be one of the most incredible wars in the final segment of the story and one that would elevate One Piece to an entirely new level.
