The One Tree Hill alum will be guest-starring opposite her real-life husband when the AMC hit returns next month
Get ready to see a new side of Negan.
As previously announced, The Walking Dead has cast Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s real-life wife, One Tree Hill alum Hilarie Burton Morgan, to play Negan’s wife Lucille in a flashback-filled episode. And now, PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at what their dynamic is like.
Of course, we already know Lucille’s fate: She died of cancer at the beginning of the zombie apocalypse and eventually became the namesake of Negan’s famous weapon — a barbed wire-covered baseball bat.
The clip shows a sliver of the table read for the last of six upcoming new episodes. This one, entitled “Here’s Negan,” will show the reformed villain reflecting on his past and coming to a conclusion about his future.

The segment opens with Josh McDermitt (who plays Eugene on the show) reading stage directions. The scene opens with present-day Negan poking at a fire as he sips “a tall glass of Alexandria’s finest homemade grog.” After taking a beat to stare at his infamous leather jacket, “his eyes start to well with tears,” McDermitt reads. “Then, we smash-cut to interior: Negan’s basement 12 years earlier.”

It soon becomes clear that the zombie apocalypse has begun, and Negan and Lucille have holed up in their basement bunker. “Negan opens the refrigerator and reveals four bags of chemotherapy drugs,” McDermitt reads. “He takes one out and carries it to another part of the basement where at last we meet Lucille. She’s lost her hair but is wearing a wild, multicolored wig and is looking through a box full of DVDs.”
“I can’t decide which James Bond movie I’m in the mood for,” Burton reads, revealing her first line as Lucille.
Lucille thinks for a moment and then hears a walker just outside. “The generator’s still making too much noise,” Negan speculates.
“We’re going to have to kill it,” Lucille says, matter-of-factly referring to the walker.

Negan shrugs off her comment: “Why bother? Turn the generator off for a little bit, they lose interest. They always lose interest.”
“It’s not like killing a person, babe,” Lucille says. “It’s not even like killing an animal. You have to stop letting it bother you.”
“It doesn’t bother me,” he says. “It doesn’t bother me, but I’m worried that I’ll get used to it.”
Of course, fans know he does get used to it. Very used to it.

Burton revealed she’d been cast in the episode back in November on Twitter. “Been pretty hard to keep this a secret. But I love working with @JDMorgan. I love watching him become #Negan and take on that swagger,” she said of her husband, who has starred on The Walking Dead since 2016. “And I love the @TheWalkingDead family. They’ve been a part of our family for ages and I’m so grateful for their kindness.”

Burton, 38, and Morgan, 54, have been together for over 11 years and wed in October 2019.
Earlier in the pandemic, the pair cohosted AMC’s Friday Night In with the Morgans.
The Walking Dead season 10 resumes for six bonus episodes beginning Feb. 28 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
