Tesla addresses Cybertruck rearview camera “recall” with free software update

Tesla has initiated a recall for the Cybetruck over a potential delay in the vehicle’s rearview camera system. The issue has already been addressed by Tesla in a free over-the-air (OTA) software update that started rolling out on September 18, 2024, though vehicle owner notification letters about the issue are expected to be mailed November 25, 2024.

As per a Safety Recall Report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration (NHTSA), a total of 27,185 Cybertrucks that were produced between November 13, 223 and September 14, 2024 are affected by the recall. The issue is described as follows:

“On certain affected vehicles, under certain conditions, the vehicle system (including the rearview image) may not complete a shutdown process before the system is commanded to boot-up. If the driver starts a backing event before the vehicle system completes its shut down and boot-up, the rearview image may not display within two seconds of placing the vehicle in reverse as required by FMVSS 111, S6.2.3.”

As per the NHTSA Safety Recall Report, Tesla Cybertrucks affected by the issue may see their rearview camera being black for up to 6-8 seconds when the vehicle is shifted to Reverse. The problem could affect a driver’s rear view and increase the risk of a collision.

Tesla noted that it identified the issue on September 12, 2024, as part of its internal compliance audit on MY 2024 Tesla Cybertrucks. An investigation was implemented from September 13 to 19, with the company performing tests to recreate the issue. Tesla completed its assessment on September 19, and a voluntary recall over the Cybertruck’s rearview camera delay was initiated.

As of September 25, 2024, Tesla has identified 45 warranty claims and four field reports that might potentially be related to the issue. The company noted that it is not aware of any collisions, fatalities, or injuries that may be related to the Cybertruck’s rearview camera delay.

Similar to the vast majority of Tesla “recalls,” the Cybertruck’s rearview camera delay issue was addressed through a software update. As per the NHTSA Safety Recall Report, Tesla rolled out a free OTA software update for the Cybertruck starting on or shortly after September 19, 2024, which included a fix for the rearview camera delay. Tesla noted that no further action would be necessary for vehicles that are equipped with software release 2024.32.5.2 or later.
