Plot Summary: The film begins with Dan Forester (Chris Pratt), a high school teacher and former Green Beret, who lives with his wife, Emmy (Betty Gilpin), and daughter, Muri. Their normal life is interrupted when soldiers from the future arrive through a wormhole to announce that in 30 years, humanity is losing a war against a deadly alien species called the “Whitespikes.” The world unites to send present-day citizens into the future to help fight the war and prevent human extinction.

Dan is drafted to join the war effort and sent to the future, where he and other soldiers face overwhelming odds against the fast and deadly alien creatures. In the future, Dan meets Colonel Muri Forester (Yvonne Strahovski), who turns out to be his now-adult daughter. She reveals that the war is on the brink of defeat, and they must find a way to end it. Together, they work to find a solution by capturing a female Whitespike, which holds the key to a possible biological weapon that could wipe out the alien species.

As Dan races against time to save both his family and the future of humanity, he also faces personal demons, including his strained relationship with his estranged father, James Forester (J.K. Simmons). The film culminates in a final mission back in the present day to stop the aliens before they can even emerge, offering a mix of high-stakes action and emotional resolution.

Direction and Pacing: The direction by Chris McKay ensures that the film moves at a brisk pace, with action scenes placed at regular intervals to keep viewers engaged. While the film runs for over two hours, the pacing rarely drags, thanks to the blend of intense action and emotional beats. The film maintains a good balance between personal drama, family dynamics, and high-stakes sci-fi conflict.

The story, however, does follow some predictable beats typical of time-travel and alien-invasion films, but McKay’s direction ensures that even familiar tropes feel exciting and fresh. The focus on Dan’s personal journey helps to ground the film, providing emotional stakes that complement the large-scale sci-fi action.
