You need to know that the Mexican film Lucca’s World (Los Dos Hemisferios de Lucca), based on an autobiographical book written by Lucca’s mother, contains difficult scenes of a child in physical distress and his persevering parents in emotional anguish. The child has severe pediatric cerebral palsy, which resulted from brain swelling and oxygen deprivation during birth. The film shows his mother losing consciousness during childbirth, and the newborn in an induced coma in an ICU unit. As he grows, he begins having epileptic seizures (shown in the film) that lead him to be malnourished. He vomits frequently and faces the risk of death during a trip to India for an alternative treatment. His parents persevere and retain hope throughout the film, showering their sons and each other with affection and tenderness. The actor playing the father/husband has a prosthetic leg, which is seen but not discussed until late in the film.
