Robin Hood, once a nobleman or soldier (depending on the version), returns to Nottingham to find his land taken and the people oppressed by the corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham and his alliance with Prince John, who rules in the absence of King Richard the Lionheart. Outraged by the injustice, Robin flees to Sherwood Forest, where he forms a band of outlaws known as the Merry Men, including Little John, Friar Tuck, and Will Scarlet. From the forest, Robin leads daring raids on the rich, stealing from corrupt nobles and “giving to the poor”. He becomes a symbol of resistance against tyranny, continually outwitting the Sheriff with clever tricks and skillful archery. Along the way, Robin rekindles his love with Maid Marian, a noblewoman who secretly supports his cause. The tale typically ends with King Richard returning, restoring justice, and pardoning Robin and his men. In darker versions, Robin is betrayed and dies, but remains a legend—a champion of the common people and a defender of justice.
