Brian Braddock, a shy and intelligent physics student from the UK, becomes Captain Britain after a near-death experience. While fleeing attackers, he crashes his motorcycle and is approached by the wizard Merlyn and his daughter Roma, who offer him a choice: the Sword of Might or the Amulet of Right. Choosing the Amulet—a symbol of wisdom and virtue—Brian is transformed into Captain Britain, the mystical protector of the British Isles. Initially fighting common criminals and supervillains in Britain, Brian’s role expands as he discovers he is part of the Captain Britain Corps—a multiversal army of Captain Britains from across the Marvel multiverse. Each one is tasked with defending their version of reality. This thrusts Brian into conflicts involving interdimensional threats, reality-warping villains (like Mad Jim Jaspers), and cosmic-level battles. He later teams up with other British heroes (and mutants) to form Excalibur, a team that handles magical, mutant, and multiverse-related threats. Brian often works alongside characters like Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, Meggan, and his sister Betsy Braddock, also known as Psylocke—who eventually takes over the Captain Britain mantle. Brian struggles with balancing his normal life, national duty, and responsibilities as a multiverse defender.
