Although he was the main character throughout the first 9 seasons of The Walking Dead, in some aspects, Rick Grimes is still considered a villain.
In an interview with Comicbook , actor Jayson Warner Smith , who played Gavin in seasons 7 and 8 of The Walking Dead , discussed the main character of the entire story: Rick Grimes .
For Gavin in particular and the entire group of Saviors led by Negan in particular, Rick Grimes is perhaps the most formidable, cold-blooded villain they have ever faced. For him and the rest of the community, their group is not necessarily the good guys, but also not the bad guys in this battle, even though they have killed many people from other communities.
After rallying four different communities living in the area to fight against Negan’s Saviors, Rick Grimes successfully captured Negan, thereby ending the war that lasted for two seasons of the show.
” I always say when people ask me how I feel about playing a villain, ‘Who’s the real villain? Rick. His group is the bad guys, and we’re the good guys, we’re the Saviors,’ ” Jayson Warner Smith shared.
” That’s why, when pushed into an emergency, everyone becomes a bad person, at least in that dark and cruel world, ” he continued.
When asked what his character would be like if he was lucky enough to survive the battle: ” Gavin would probably reform and stop killing. This character would also soon join one of the living communities after the battle is over .”
Not only Jayson Warner Smith, actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan , who plays Negan, also expressed similar views in an interview with Good Morning America . Specifically, Jeffrey pointed directly at his co-star Andrew Lincoln and declared that the character Rick Grimes is just as evil and brutal as Negan.
” I think at this point in the story, anyone who survives this apocalypse has done something incredibly bad and evil. If viewers had followed Negan for the past eight years, they would have been on his side, and Rick Grimes and his group would have been the villains. It seems that what actor Jeffrey shared is completely correct, because it was Rick’s group that came up with the idea of destroying the Saviors first so that they could receive food subsidies from the Hilltop community . So to be fair, Rick Grimes is just as evil as the other characters. However, in this context, those are the things he needs to do to protect the people he loves.
